Chapter 11

Twerp

Gamble

“Don’t let them get under your skin, Gage,” Brittney said.

He tossed a rag onto a workbench, shook his head, and kept the phone to his ear. “You know they’ve been under my skin like a bad splinter for years. They should all be in jail, Brit.”

“Gage, for the last time, you need to let it go.”

He ran his free hand through his hair. “How the hell can you let it go?”

Her smile came through in her voice. “Because I found a good man. And that’s the other reason I’m not worried about their threat. He’s a damn good cop, who’s headed to the FBI. I should have called you sooner, but we’re moving to Virginia.”

His lungs froze. “You are?”

“Yeah.”

The upside was that the move brought her closer to Biloxi, but she would still be over nine hundred miles away.

He walked out to the parking lot in front of the garage bay. “Are you marrying this guy?”

“His name is Taylor, you know.”

“Yeah. Are you marrying him?”

She paused. “I’m a pretty liberal, forward-thinking woman, but for marriage, I would need to be asked first. I’m a little old-fashioned that way.”

He huffed out a laugh. “Okay, has Taylor mentioned marriage or any of that shit?”

“We’ve been living together for six years now, baby brother. We’ve looked at rings in the past. It hasn’t been discussed much, but I’m sure he’ll ask when he’s ready.”

“He drags you across the country and dumps you, I’m comin’ up there to kick his ass. I don’t give a damn if he's in the FBI or not.”

Brittney laughed for a long time, which made him smile. He loved making her laugh. “It isn’t the stone age anymore, Gage. He’s not ‘dragging’ me anywhere. I went with him to find a place to live. Hell, I have to change jobs too, you know. I’m cool with this. We love each other, the legalities will work themselves out when the time’s right.”

“Okay,” he muttered.

Part of him wondered if their parents knew about Taylor, but he shoved that aside.

As though she were on the same wavelength, his sister said, “Mom and Dad are coming up to meet him when we settle in Virginia.”

He bit his lip. She’d been with him for over six years. Their parents should have met him already. Then again, his parents were procrastinators of the first order… unless a betting window was closing. They knew how to haul ass and get money on the line for that.

“Don’t be angry, Gage,” she murmured.

“Never gonna happen, Brit.”

“You gotta let that go. It isn’t healthy to hang onto your ill-will. Especially against our parents.”

He tipped his head back and stared at the blue sky. “How you can be so forgiving, I’ll never know.”

“What happened to me was awful, but it happened. Past tense. I can’t dwell on that and live in the past. If I did, I’d never know the love of a good man.”

He sighed. “You’re right. But you need to keep your guard up. If you want me to talk to Taylor, I’ll do that.
